My friend "Pilgrim" has been modeling as Santa in many of my Christmas Card paintings. Each year I plan an idea and some poses for the new card. This time we had Wapila and his brother JJ Bald Eagle wait inside their tee pee. We had a young 2 year old buffalo that was being handled by the man who was training him for a wild west show. The handler brought the buffalo around the tee pee, but the kids didn't know that he was coming. I had my camera ready and called for them to look outside. The expressions on their faces were genuine surprise! Later, I had "Pilgrim" come around the tee pee holding a rope as if he were walking the buffalo. With many references, I put my composition together of Santa bringing the gift of a white buffalo to the Lakota children at Christmas time.
