Giclee Prints

Like offset lithographs, Giclée prints start with an original painting. A transparency of the original is scanned into a computer, where it can be color corrected, stored digitally and printed out as needed on a Epson R1900 printer, using pigment based inks.  The original is present during this process for color and detail check comparisons with each print.
A series of tiny nozzles spray the paper or canvas, with a fine stream of pigmented ink.  Giclée prints have a higher resolution than offset lithographs because there are no line screens involved. Giclee prints have about 1800 dpi (dots per inch) while offset lithographs are about 300 dpi.  The dots of color on Lithograph prints are encircled by white space, like in newspaper printing. However, in the Giclée process inks are sprayed as droplets rather than dots; each droplet bleeds into the paper creating more of continuous tone than dot pattern. The Giclée prints' inks are a pigment based ink, verses an   dye based ink and tests for longevity outlast most lithograph inks. The Pigment particles are larger than that of dye particles, and hold color longer.  The prints can last 85-100 years without noticeable fading, assuming certain care factors are followed for archival museum-quality prints

Shipping is free in the USA on orders over $60.

THE MYSTIC

Picture
Limited Edition of 95 signed and numbered - Giclee on canvas 8 x 10 inches

This barn owl was from a wildlife rescue center and was stretching his wing- I used the feather patterns to create the circle pattern that is reminiscent of the moon. The owl is considered a visionary and for many Native Americans of the Southwest, it is believed that owls should be avoided as they are the bringer of bad news. The Native tribes of the Northwest and some North Eastern tribes have a higher opinion of owls and they are placed at the tops of the totem poles. Personally, I love the little guys and have done many paintings of them. I always contribute a portion of the sales of my originals that involve the rescue animals to the various centers that are working to preserve their populations.

Spots

Picture
Limited Edition of 95 signed and numbered - Giclee on canvas 14 x 11 inches
Framed in Barn Wood.
The Spotted Owl was from a rescue center and several photographers and artists were taking photos of it.  The handler had placed her in a pine tree and most were photographing from the front.

I wanted to see if I could get her to turn her head as only an owl can do and look over her shoulder at me.  I went behind her and called to her "Look at me"  She turned and gave me a stare, then went back to watching the crowd in front of her.  I asked again "Look at me" and she turned again.  She did that four times and the others were asking me when I learned to talk to owls.  I called her Spots, but was tempted to call it "Look at me".

WISE GUY

Picture
Limited Edition of 95 signed and numbered - Giclee on canvas 10 x 8 inches

The Saw Whet Owl was from a wildlife rescue center. The patterns behind the owl are abstract feather designs inspired by the shapes of his tail feathers.

LORD OF THE DANCE

Picture
Limited Edition of 95 signed and numbered - Giclee on canvas 10 x 8 inches

The Kestrel or sometimes called a Sparrow Hawk was from a wildlife rescue center. The circle pattern behind the Kestrel is made up of abstract feather designs inspired by the shapes of the feathers. A portion of the sales of my originals is donated to the various rescue centers that are working to preserve wildlife populations.

Black Hills Gold

Picture
Limited Edition of 95 signed and numbered - Giclee on canvas 8 x 10 inches

This beautiful Golden Eagle has no name. The people who work with these raptors plan to work toward their healing and release. They are not pets and naming forms an unwanted attachment. Often times birds can not be released and become ambassadors to introduce the public to the needs of wildlife. People learn the importance of respecting these birds in their natural environment. Breeding programs have been developed with birds that are too injured to be set free. The eggs from breeding pairs can be added to nests in the wild. I have photographed many birds at wildlife rescue centers in the US. I always donate a portion of the sale of originals that feature animals from rescue centers to the centers. These people work selflessly to insure the continuation of the populations of wild birds and animals.

THE PATRIOT

Picture
Limited Edition of 95 signed and numbered - Giclee on canvas 12 x 24 inches

The eagle is from a raptor rescue center. He was injured and unable to be released but is now used to educate people about wild life. This bird has a beautiful spirit. Even though he can't fly, in the painting The Patriot, he soars as it was meant to be. 5% of my originals, involving rescued animals, is donated to the centers to help support their care.

Beep Beep

Picture
Limited Edition of 95 signed and numbered - Giclee on canvas  24 x 12 inches

These two roadrunners spent the spring and summer drinking from our dogs' water dish and dashing in and out of the yard, driving them nuts! It was easy to get good photos as they came up to my backdoor and were curious about what was inside.

I think the lizard might get away. What do you think?

Magician

Legends tell of the White Raven that flew too close to the sun and her feathers were blackened like the night.

MESILLA HARVEST

Picture
Limited Edition of 95 signed and numbered - Giclee on canvas 8 x 10 inches

Gambel Quail are common to Southern New Mexico and are featured in this painting as Mama and Papa quail take there little ones out to find food. They are curious about the chili seeds that have fallen from the basket. The design in the basket is from a Native American design called a "Zia" and is the symbol on our New Mexico flag. We live in a valley along the Rio Grande River and it is called Mesilla Valley. Chili and grape vineyards are bountiful here which lends to the title of this painting, Mesilla Harvest.

Pahin Giclee

Picture
Limited Edition of 95 signed and numbered - Giclee on canvas   11 x 14 inches
Framed in Barn Wood.

Pahin means porcupine in the Lakota Language. My friend Chief David Bald Eagle helped me with the name. My model was a little female named Snuggles. She is a permanent resident to the Wildlife Center in Espanola, NM. She was a little slow getting across the road and was hit by a car. Due to her injuries she will not be released into the wild. She is a great animal ambassador for the center and goes to many schools and large gatherings such as art shows, where she helps educate humans to the needs and rights of wildlife.

MANU

Picture
Limited Edition of 95 signed and numbered - Giclee on canvas 10 x 8 inches

Manu was severely abused by being tied in a yard to a tree and neglected. When he was brought to the rescue center, he was nearly dead. The vet said he had not more than a week left. The people at the Candy Kitchen Wolf Rescue worked with him for months, restoring his physical health and working on his mental health. Wolves are by nature a social animal and Manu wanted nothing to do with people or wolves. Over a long period of time, various female wolves were introduced to him and he chased them away until one day they brought Sequoia into his pen. She was an Alpha female and did not tolerate his attitude. There was a click and it was love a last for good old Manu. No we know behind every successful Manu is a good woman.

The larger wolf, in the background, is from the original Candy Kitchen Wolf Rescue Center, that is now called Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary.  His name is Zeus and he is about 2 years old.  He is guarding the three wolves on the eagle feather.  Los Lobos is Spanish for “The Wolves”.

Still Waters

She sees her reflection of her spirit, the wolf.
She is the communicator, the traveler,
the pathfinder and the teacher.

The Corporate Ladder

Picture
Limited Edition of 95 signed and numbered - Giclee on canvas   30 x 14 inches

The baby bears in this tree had expressions that gave me the title of this painting. The bear at the top looks as though he has conquered the world and isn't letting anything get past him. The little brown one looks as though he is saying, "I'll never make it to the top. Sometimes my paintings come with a poem or as in this case, a toast. This is hand written on each print by the numbering and signature/date.

For those who made it to the top. For those who struggled at the bottom. And for us lucky few who never got on The Corporate Ladder. km

Shield of the Bear

Picture
Limited Edition of 95 signed and numbered - Giclee on canvas   16 x 12 inches

The shield is decorated with bands of Red, Yellow, Black and White for the four directions with a Grizzly bear in the center. In many native cultures, the bear symbolizes healing. At the bottom is a bear fetish with a medicine bundle tied on its back.

Thunder and Lightning

Picture
Limited Edition of 95 signed and numbered - Giclee on canvas    24 x 12 inches

In America's past, buffalo roamed the plains and when they ran it sounded like the rumble of thunder and the earth shook.
Once in awhile a rare birth occurs and a white buffalo is born and there is lightning.
Thunder and Lightning is wired to hang in either position and the prints are signed in both directions.  Its up to you to decide which way is up.

See Spot Run

Picture
Limited Edition of 95 signed and numbered - Giclee on canvas    12 x 16 inches

The eagle feather is painted with four horses that represent the Rainbow of Mankind. Red, Yellow, Black and White. The Appaloosa pony is patterned with many colors to represent harmony. After finishing the painting and thinking about what I would call it, all that came to mind was a phrase from the Dick and Jane Reader. I chuckled a little to myself as I named it “See Spot Run”. It seemed the perfect title.

Horse Laugh

Picture
Limited Edition of 95 signed and numbered - Giclee on canvas 8 x 10 inches

Garrett Shearer is my model and boy did we have fun with this scene. He dressed as a "Dandy" or Dude and we started doing silly ideas with his horse. I asked him to throw the saddle on backwards and he pretended to scratch his head as he looked puzzled. I said it would be great if we could get the horse to turn and look at him like he was nuts. Garrett said, "I can do that!" Then he put some grass in his back pocket and the horse turned his head and stretched out his lips to get that grass that was a little out of his reach. It looked just like he was laughing!

Tongue Twisters

Picture
Limited Edition of 95 signed and numbered - Giclee on canvas   16 x 12 inches

When I was in South Dakota at Artist Ride, I wanted to find the biggest, gentlest horse and the littlest, cutest girl and put them together to see what would happen. I struck pure GOLD! The little girl in the following paintings is Kellyn and she is about 3 years old. The horse is named Snowball. She’s a 17 hands tall Paint mare that is almost all white. All I had to do was get my camera ready and let them go. Then Kellyn walked Snowball and looked up at the horse and stuck her tongue out. I used my artistic license to make Snowball do the same. This print is a mate to "Our Little Secret" that is a limited edition Giclee and the same size - 12 x 16

THE MAD HATTER

Picture
Limited Edition of 95 signed and numbered - Giclee on canvas 10 x 8 inches

The donkey's name is Rambo and he is full of mischief. I'm sure he had he would have liked a chance to nibble on Geraniums, instead of having them decorate his hat. Rambo lives in Castle Rock, Co with his owners Jim and Cindy. He is quite a character!

Z is for Zebra

Picture
Limited Edition of 95 signed and numbered - Giclee on canvas   16 x 12 inches

The butterfly is a Zebra Swallow Tail and the stripes and mane inspired an idea to make mirrored images of zebras with their heads down and necks arched. The line of the neck looked like the lines created in the butterfly’s top wings with a blending of the mane to the designs in the butterfly.

Cathy Williams enlisted as a Buffalo Soldier in 1866 after she was freed as a slave. She enlisted under the name William Cathay and kept her identity as a female secret. She served for two years before leaving company A and began a new life as a successful business woman in Colorado.

Cathy Williams Revealed shows female soldier proudly saluting. In the background, she is a Buffalo Soldier of 1866. The past and today are separated by a herd of running buffalo coming from the stars of the flag.

Her history plays an important part of her own self discovery and confidence as today's soldier.

Santa's Rainbow

Picture
Limited Edition of 95 signed and numbered - Giclee on canvas 10 x 8 inches

Jay Lewis "Pilgrim" is helping 3 year old, Gissell bring in a beautiful Rainbow Trout.  Actually we tied chocolate candies to the line and she was really getting into this fishing business.  We did convince her to let her mama hold her "fish" for her as she threw out her line for another, and another, and another.  This was so much fun that I got to re-live the whole event as I painted it.    It's a good catch!

Tatanka Christmas

Picture
Limited Edition of 95 signed and numbered - Giclee on canvas   18 x 24 inches

Santa is being pulled by American Bison (buffalo) as he cracks his buggy whip with a magic spark on its tip. He has left the Lakota Village of tee pees and is heading out into the night. The Star of Bethlehem leads the way as he carries a sack in his antique sleigh. The sack is filled with Lakota, Navajo and Apache Dolls, Bows and Arrows and a small stuff Buffalo doll.
I was going to photograph 2600 buffalo at the Triple 7 Ranch and my Santa friend, Jay Lewis at the Shearer Ranch in South Dakota. I have made a Santa painting every year for many years with Jay and ideas had always come easily. This time I was stuck. Dry as a bone. Not an idea in sight. Then I went to sleep and had the wildest dream. You can see it for your self as I was floating in the air and watching Santa driving his mighty steeds out of the village, across the snow and into the moonlit night.
I could feel the snow flying in my face. When I woke, I jotted it all down in a quick sketch. I saw Jay and told him all about the dream. We began assembling all the pieces.
The sleigh was at the ranch. The cowboys helped me prop it up in front with logs so it would look like it was about to take off. Jay had a buggy whip and a bag and I gathered all my dolls and toys to fill the opening. I was telling the ranchers son, Garrett that I was up in the air. He asked how high up? Then came around with a front end loader and I got in the bucket and was lifted about 10 ft, the perfect angle! We waited for twilight and lit the scene with a Coleman lantern. Later, we put lanterns in the tee pees and I got some more night shots. The next day we went to the Triple 7 and photographed buffalo. I got a set of bulls down in a valley. I got bulls at eye level and where was I going to get the flying ones? As we rounded a corner in the pickup, there were two bulls standing on a ledge above us. One tossed his beard in the air and I swear they looked like they were flying. This painting is literally a dream come true. Tatanka means buffalo in the Lakota language. Tatanka Christmas passes all seasons and can hang in your house all year long.
