Santa is being pulled by American Bison (buffalo) as he cracks his buggy whip with a magic spark on its tip. He has left the Lakota Village of tee pees and is heading out into the night. The Star of Bethlehem leads the way as he carries a sack in his antique sleigh. The sack is filled with Lakota, Navajo and Apache Dolls, Bows and Arrows and a small stuff Buffalo doll. I was going to photograph 2600 buffalo at the Triple 7 Ranch and my Santa friend, Jay Lewis at the Shearer Ranch in South Dakota. I have made a Santa painting every year for many years with Jay and ideas had always come easily. This time I was stuck. Dry as a bone. Not an idea in sight. Then I went to sleep and had the wildest dream. You can see it for yourself as I was floating in the air and watching Santa driving his mighty steeds out of the village, across the snow and into the moonlit night. I could feel the snow flying in my face. When I woke, I jotted it all down in a quick sketch. I saw Jay and told him all about the dream. We began assembling all the pieces.The sleigh was at the ranch. The cowboys helped me prop it up in front with logs so it would look like it was about to take off. Jay had a buggy whip and a bag and I gathered all my dolls and toys to fill the opening. I was telling the ranchers son, Garrett that I was up in the air. He asked how high up? Then came around with a front end loader and I got in the bucket and was lifted about 10 ft., the perfect angle! We waited for twilight and lit the scene with a Coleman lantern. Later, we put lanterns in the tee pees and I
got some more night shots. The next day we went to the Triple 7 and photographed buffalo. I got a set of bulls down in a valley. I got bulls at eye level and where was I going to get the flying ones? As we rounded a corner in the pickup, there were two bulls standing on a ledge above us. One tossed his beard in the air and I swear they looked like they were flying. This painting is literally a dream come true. Tatanka means buffalo in the Lakota Language.
