Parenting 101
Roadrunners mate for life and are both involved in the raising of their babies. Both take turns either hunting for food of sitting on the nest. Since the male and female look alike, there is no clear way to tell who is on the nest and who is hunting. The nests appear to be randomly built but I've watched them build and they are quite particular about each stick and where it goes. They will even slam the twigs on the ground to break them into exactly the right size. Some human parents could learn from these birds in Parenting 101 |

One of the parent Roadrunners is watching the nest as the babies begin to hatch. Since Roadrunners mate for life and are both parents are involved in the raising of their young. They take turns either hunting for food or tending the nest. We aren't sure in this scene who is guarding the nest since the male and female look alike and are the same size. Although the nest appears to be randomly built, they are quite particular about each stick and where it goes. I've even seen them slam the twigs on the ground to break them into exactly the right size. They are amazing parents. Humans could take lessons |

I had a chance to photograph this beautiful Harris Hawk as she was transported to a wildlife clinic to be treated for burns from an electrical wire. She was a beautiful bird with a beautiful spirit. I knew I would be painting her the moment we met. |
