Midas Touch
Many of my hummingbird paintings involve cacti. I use the cactus from around my house and in the desert behind my house. I have a feeder outside my window and have plenty of models for my "hummers". Our most common species of hummingbirds in the Las Cruces area are the Broad Tail, Black Chinned and Rufus. Many times I will work a medallion into the sky as a sun or moon with a hummingbird design in the beads. |

A Broad-Billed Hummingbird is about to dip into a beautiful Yellow Bird of Paradise. (Caesalpinia gilliesii) The flowers are abundant in Southwestern landscapes and thrive in warm climates. The Broad-Billed Hummingbird is found in Southeastern Arizona, Southwestern New Mexico and Mexico. Native Americans often refer to them as the littlest warriors as they seem to fear nothing. The hummer in A Touch of Paradise is a male and has a blue throat and red bill. |

wise guy - saw whet owl

Giclee on canvas 8 x 10 inches |
Wise Guy
Saw Whet Owl was from a rescue center. The patterns behind the owl are abstract feather designs inspired by the shapes of his tail feathers. The owl is considered a visionary and for many Native Americans of the Southwest, it is believed that owls should be avoided as they are the bringer of bad news. The Native tribes of the Northwest and some North Eastern tribes have a higher opinion of owls and they are placed at the tops of the totem poles. Personally, I love the little guys and have done many paintings of owls. |

We live in the Mesilla Valley by the Rio Grande River, a valley known for its’ hot Chile and grape vineyards. |
parenting 101- roadrunner mates

Parenting 101
Roadrunners mate for life and are both involved in the raising of their babies. Both take turns either hunting for food of sitting on the nest. Since the male and female look alike, there is no clear way to tell who is on the nest and who is hunting. The nests appear to be randomly built but I've watched them build and they are quite particular about each stick and where it goes. They will even slam the twigs on the ground to break them into exactly the right size. Some human parents could learn from these birds in Parenting 101. |

Desert Circle of Life
The Roadrunner lives near our house in Las Cruces, NM. She and her mate hunt every day for their babies that are in a nest they made in an Arizona cypress tree. The Whiptail lizard with its bright blue tail is common to our area. The lizard conforms to the ridges of a basket, hoping to blend and hide from the sharp-eyed and skilled hunter. |

In Taz's Garden
I imagined the two Roadrunners in Taz’s beautiful garden. Everywhere I turned there were rare cacti, cow and buffalo skulls and other interesting southwestern objects. I arranged the cow skull painting a roadrunner on top of it. The second roadrunner was on a Matate’ stone, filled with rain water caught by a storm. What a peaceful setting. |
